About AVIF Cove
AVIF Cove is a small collection of free image tools: an AVIF converter, AVIF to JPG and PNG, a WebP converter, a compressor with a target-size search, a batch resizer, an EXIF remover and an AVIF support checker. They are made for people who publish images on the web and for anyone who wants smaller, cleaner photo files.
How it works
Everything happens in your browser. When you add an image, your browser decodes it. Encoding runs in background Web Workers using WebAssembly builds of well-known open-source codecs, packaged by the jSquash project:
- libavif with the aom AV1 encoder for AVIF
- libwebp for WebP
- MozJPEG for JPEG
- Squoosh’s PNG and resize codecs (Rust) for PNG output and Lanczos resizing
The codec files are served from this site and loaded only when a tool first needs them. ZIP files are built with fflate, also in your browser. The EXIF remover is plain TypeScript that edits the file structure directly and never re-encodes the picture.
What it doesn’t do
There are no accounts, no uploads, no image hosting, no ads and no cookies. Because nothing is processed on a server, AVIF Cove can’t see, store or recover your images. Close the tab and they are gone from this page.
Very large images are limited by your device’s memory, and encoding speed depends on its processor. A recent laptop converts a 12-megapixel photo to AVIF in a few seconds.
