AVIF to JPG converter

Some apps, email clients and upload forms still refuse AVIF. Turn AVIF pictures into ordinary JPEGs that open everywhere, encoded with MozJPEG for small files.

    Converting AVIF to JPG

    1. Add your AVIF files by dropping them on the page or choosing them. Other formats work too, so a mixed folder is fine.
    2. Each file converts straight away with the settings on the right. Change a setting and press “Convert again” to redo the batch.
    3. Check the result in the comparison, then download single files or a ZIP.

    Choosing the settings

Quality 80–90 gives JPEGs that are hard to tell apart from the AVIF. The JPEG will normally be larger than the AVIF it came from; that is the price of compatibility. 4:4:4 chroma keeps red text and thin coloured lines crisp in screenshots, at a somewhat larger size. Progressive JPEGs show a preview while they download and are usually a few percent smaller, so leave it on unless an old system rejects them.

AVIF supports transparency but JPEG does not, so transparent pixels are blended onto the fill colour. Pick white for documents, or your page background for web graphics. If you need to keep transparency, use AVIF to PNG instead.

    Questions

Will converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

Every lossy re-encode changes the image slightly, but at quality 85 or higher the difference is very hard to see. What you cannot get back is detail the AVIF encoder already discarded; converting to JPEG does not restore it.

Why is the JPEG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses far more efficiently than JPEG, so the same picture needs more bytes as a JPEG. Lower the quality or set a max width if the JPEG needs to be smaller.

    What happens to transparent areas?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are blended onto the fill colour you choose (white by default). Convert to PNG to keep transparency.

Can I convert animated AVIF files?

Only the first frame is converted, because JPEG holds a single still image.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and MozJPEG, compiled to WebAssembly, encodes the JPEG in a background worker on this device. Nothing is sent to a server.
