PNG settings

PNG is lossless: the file holds exactly the pixels decoded from your AVIF, including transparency. There is no quality setting, and the PNG is usually several times larger than the AVIF.

Scaling a large picture down keeps the PNG manageable.

    Converting AVIF to PNG

Drop one or more AVIF files on the page, or choose them with the button. Each image is decoded by your browser (with a WebAssembly AVIF decoder as a fallback) and written out as a PNG in a background worker, so the page stays responsive even with large batches. Download files one by one or all together as a ZIP.

    Why PNG?

PNG is the safest lossless format: every image editor, office suite and operating system opens it, and it keeps an alpha channel for transparent logos, stickers and screenshots. Converting to PNG is also the right first step if you plan to edit the picture and save it again, because each further lossy save would add new compression artefacts.

If you only need a smaller file that opens everywhere, AVIF to JPG gives far smaller results for photos. For web graphics with transparency, lossless WebP is usually much smaller than PNG.

    Questions

Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?

No further quality is lost: the PNG stores exactly the pixels the AVIF decodes to. It cannot bring back detail that was discarded when the AVIF was made.

    Is transparency kept?

Yes. AVIF images with an alpha channel become PNGs with the same transparency.

Why is my PNG so large?

PNG is lossless and works best on graphics with flat colours. Photos have millions of slightly different pixels, so a lossless PNG of a photo is large. Use AVIF to JPG or a max width if size matters.

What about HDR and 10-bit AVIF files?

Images are converted as 8-bit sRGB, which is what PNG viewers expect, so wide-gamut and HDR AVIF files lose their extra colour and brightness range.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in this browser tab. Your AVIF files never leave your device.
