    How the WebP converter works

Drop images on the page or choose them. In automatic mode, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP and AVIF files become WebP, while WebP files become PNG, so you can convert in both directions at once. Pick a fixed output format to send everything one way.

    Quality
75–85 suits most photos. WebP at quality 80 is typically noticeably smaller than a JPEG of similar appearance.
    Lossless WebP
Keeps every pixel, including transparency. For logos, icons, UI screenshots and diagrams it usually beats PNG by a wide margin. For photos, lossless files stay large.
    WebP effort
libwebp’s “method” from 0 to 6. Higher values take longer and give slightly smaller files; 4 is the libwebp default.

    WebP or AVIF?

AVIF usually compresses photos better than WebP, but encodes much more slowly. WebP is quick to encode and supported by every current browser. Many sites serve AVIF first and WebP or JPEG as fallbacks; the AVIF converter and the picture snippet generator help with that.

    Questions

    Which browsers support WebP?

All current browsers display WebP, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (since Safari 14 on macOS Big Sur and iOS 14). It is safe to use on the web today.

Should I use lossy or lossless WebP?

Use lossy for photos and lossless for graphics with flat colours, text or sharp edges. When in doubt, convert one file both ways and compare sizes in the list.

    Is transparency supported?

Yes. Both lossy and lossless WebP keep the alpha channel, and so do PNG and AVIF output. JPEG output places transparent areas on white.

Can it convert animated WebP or GIF?

Only the first frame is converted. Animated images become still images.

Do my files leave my computer?

No. Encoding runs in WebAssembly builds of libwebp, MozJPEG and libavif inside this browser tab.
